Transit lines in a freeway median are a bad idea - for many reasons. Transit and the auto are not good substitutes for serving a corridor. Who wants to wait for a train in the middle all the fumes and noise? And the station is disconnected from its surroundings by an ocean of asphalt.

Having said that, better leveraging these corridors is a no-brainer. Indiana is looking to lease corridors for fiber optics lines, and I recently read an article about using interstate ROW for solar energy connection.

Hi Urbanophile, I agree. I think that probably, if we want to do this right, there would have to be some money set aside for redesign of the roadways at the stations to mitigate the noise and fumes. As they are currently designed, a highway to which transit is added in the median would become an even more unpleasant place to be for everyone.

Maybe it ends up being that the highway would have to be decked over at the station, or rerouted, or buried, or elevated? Designers could make a big impact on making such a space exciting and dynamic, rather than toxic and noisy.
